A Cork Oak Tree
* Voids can't be avoided in natural cork. This is a natural growth feature of cork oak. We do our very best to select void and blemish free shives for our top grade handles, but please be aware that even the best cork will inevitably have some voids. When we build a handle if we come across a particularly large void or natural fault, It is impractical to scrap the whole handle. If a large void or fault is uncovered during turning on the lathe, each fault is carefully cut out and a new piece of flor grade cork is inserted and bonded in place to restore the overall quality of the handle.
Handles Bores
Cork handles can be bored to suit the diameter of your blank. Maximum size we can bore a trout handle is 12mm. The std bore is 5/16" (8mm) Note: We don't offer a bore below 5/16"(8mm.)

* Specie is harvested and cut differently from regular rod handle cork. Specie is cut across the grain to take account of the natural growth compression of the tree. This type of cut gives a much firmer, longer lasting cork under the hand than regular random cut cork.
"Hi David,
Thank you for the custom handle you made for me. This is the best cork I have ever had in my hand on a fly rod. The old adage that you get what you pay for applies to your excellents handles.

Dura Cork Sheet.

Durable composite cork/rubber mix. Ideal for making up the end of fighting butts or for the butt of salmon fly rod handles. Much lighter than the traditional heavy brass threaded screw in rubber buttons. This material is easily sanded to shape, and is very hard wearing.
Each sheet is 4.5" (11.5mm) X 4.5" (11.5mm) X 5mm thick. Cut to shape with scissors or a sharp craft knife. For thicker sections just glue up as many layers as required.

New!
Now available in 2mm thickness. This thinner fine grain material is Ideal for making decorative inlays on handles as well as using it in multi layers for reinforcing the ends of handles or fighting butts.
An excellent effect can be had by bonding alternate layers of the 5mm and the 2mm materials.
The PU Cork Glue listed below is ideal for bonding this material.
Order Code. DC-5mm £2.49 per sheet.
Order Code. DC-2mm £2.29 per sheet.

Cork plugs.

These cork plugs have many uses. We use them for sealing the ends male joint on our rod blanks
They are also handy for sealing off the ends of fighting butts or handle extensions. Very usefull too for
cutting up into large slivers to patch and repair any fissures in your rod handle. Easily cut with a craft
knife or razor blade. 1/2" diameter. 1/2" deep. (12.7mm X 12.7mm)
Order Code. Cork-Plug £0.99 per 10.
The best glue you will ever find for assembling cork sections or for fitting handles. Sands very well with no hard glue joints as happens with most epoxy glues. Expands it's volume on contact with the materials you intend to bond. Ideal building up preformed handles from individual shives. Ideal for fitting pre formed handles.* You will have no more loose or creaking cork on your fly rod "ever," if you use this glue.
20 ml bottle. Contains enough for about 10 trout rod handles or more. Order Code. PUCorGlu-20 £2.49.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE - IMPORTANT PLEASE TAKE NOTE: This adhesive must be used very sparingly. This industrial grade polyurethane glue has a higher expansion volume than regular polyurethane glues. Very little is needed to do the job. It is advisable to glue together a few test pieces of scrap cork or wood to see how the glue expands in use before committing glue to the finished handle project. Apply the glue sparingly to one surface only, then lightly clamp or keep pressure on the glued parts for at least 1 hour till it sets. The full cure time depends on the temperature, the moisture content of the pieces being glued, and the humidity of the air in the room where you are working.
TIP - For long term storage after use, squeeze the bottle to eliminate as much air as possible, then screw the cap home firmly and store upside down.
Cellulose Thinners is ideal for cleaning up PU glue residue from cork or components.
* A customer recently made an enquiry about this glue: "Will this adhesive damage the blank as it expands?"
The glue will bond to the solid blank surface, but although it has a high expansion rate, it can't penetrate the blank. It will only expand along the lines of least resistance - which is any gaps between the cork and the blank & any crevices in the cork.
"David, Just to say thanks for all your very sensible advice. The glue is extraordinary stuff, foaming away all over the place, and I enjoyed myself no end gluing wine bottle corks to each other. The end result is a rod handle which is very firmly attached, so thanks again for your help.
Best, Henry "

Crystal clear epoxy ideal for assembling all reel seat components, fitting tip guides etc. This formula expands slightly when cured, making it ideal for rod assembly.
Bonds metal to metal, metal to plastics, wood to metal and all types of plastic. 5 minute cure time at 18. c.
Supplied in a handy syringe pack for simple measuring out of the two components - resin and hardner.
Tip: Before use, if using the tubes of epoxy that have been stored at a low temperature, the plungers can be difficult to press. Place the tubes in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes to thin the epoxy.
Order Code. Epox-25ml. £3.79
Cork Filler.
For filling crevices or voids in cork handles. This is my own formula which has evolved by trial and error over a number of years to be the best available. The colour and consistency matches most cork grades perfectly. Apply with a thin knife blade or plastic spreader and press into any voids. Allow to dry for several hours then sand smooth. Deep fissures may need two applications. It is solvent based so use in a well ventilated room. Fit the cap immediately after use to prevent it going hard. Can be easily reconstituted and thinned with cellulose thinners Contains enough for at least 10-15 rod handles.
Note: When you open the bottle you will find a small puddle of thinners sitting on top of the filler. Before we post the filler out, we top the container up with a small amount of thinner so that the filler gets to you in good usable condition. Before use just mix the thinner in with the filler and apply as described.
Order Code. CorFil 20ml tub. £3.49
" Hi David, This is the best cork filler I have came across. I've tried all the usual options like sanding cork and then mixing it with Arldite or PVA glue. It fills the holes, but just looks crap. This stuff I got from you blends in so much better than those makeshift remedies. Thanks, John ."

Razor Blade Holder.

Turns a standard hard back razor blade into a multi-purpose tool.
This neat little holder gives you a better grip of the blade which allows you to see the area you are trimming more clearly. Turns a razor blade into a mini scraper. We use dulled cast off blades that have been used for thread trimming in the holder to strip of old finish from rods we renovate. Order Code. RazHold £2.75 each. Includes one blade.
De-Greaser Anti-Silicone Wipe.
This is the product I use to thoroughly remove any traces of silicon, wax, or grease from the rod blank before applying varnish. Occasionally you will get small areas called "birds eyes" where the varnish will not stick due to the blank due to contamination. It can also be used on your whippings before applying your finish.
If you have ever applied a two part rod finish and seen the coating separate from areas on the whipping - it has been contaminated by silicon. Contamination can come from many sources - the sweat on your hands, soap, hair grease, even from the sandwich you just ate.... This fluid is guaranteed to remove all traces of grease or silicon!
Use sparingly and apply a thin coat of the fluid with a clean cloth or tissue then use a new fresh cloth or tissue to wipe it dry. 20ml. Enough for dozens of projects.
Order Code. DGWipe. 20ml tub £1.29
New 100ml Pack Size!
FLEX COAT Professional Standard Epoxy Rod Wrap Finish.
New latest UV resistant ultra clear flexible formula. Out performs all other polymer two-part whipping finishes.
Can be applied in one or two coats. 10ml of mixed resin is enough to coat all the whippings on a 10ft fly rod.
There is no need to purchase the thin light build formula if you want to finish your whips in a low build flat finish. To achieve this type of finish apply the resin lightly and allow it to soak into the thread. Heat from a hair dryer will help the thread to absorb the resin. Allow to dry (tack dry is sufficient) and apply a second light finishing coat. If you require a high build finish apply a single heavy coat.

Recoil Guides. I get asked for these often. I could just jump on the bandwagon and sell them, but I don't offer them... they have issues. I appreciate they are sexy
and the current fad. The ability to spring back when dinged is a really brilliant idea.
The material is great for making flexible frame spectacles.... I
think they are a poor choice though for long term use on rods. They seem to wear out so quickly. I've see to many rods here in for repair that show premature wear. This picture shows a guide removed from a Loomis rod that a customer sent for re-ringing. It was only just over a season old. The tip guide was virtually sawn through. Hard Chrome plating on rod guides beats this material hands down for light weight coupled to excellent wear resistance. Cheaper to purchase too! Google the Vickers hardness comparison figures for titanium and chrome, and you will see titanium is way down the hardness scale in comparison with Titanium even when reinforced and alloyed with other metals. The company that makes them have just introduced a new range of these guides with a physical vapour deposition coating to improve the surface hardness. This is an admission they have an issue with the current versions..... It "might" cure the wear problem these guides have, but . Hard coatings such as these do not hold up well when flexed........Vapour coating isn't new. There are several types of coatings used on guides. Titanim Nitride,
Titanium CarboNitride (TiCN) are two examples. None of them have proven long term to offer any real advantage over chrome as a guide coating. My advice is to save your money and buy reliable chrome guides. The wear factor is superior and the weight difference when compared with titanium guides is marginal.
